Frequently Asked Questions

- What is the difference between you and
aikido?
While we share common principles with aikido, our
art is arguably more practical, and includes a greater
variety and integration of weaponry. We strive very
much to honour our ancient roots in both application
and spirit. Furthermore, at the senior end of the
School, our art continues to evolve and explore; it is
not a closed system.
While your first couple of classes are free, monthly
fees at the Honbu dojo in Brisbane are $85.
- What is your class schedule for
adults?
Brisbane dojo has general classes suitable for all
levels on Monday and Wednesday nights, from
six to seven thirty p.m. and on Saturdays
from ten thirty to twelve thirty.
Battojutsu classes are on Saturday mornings from
nine to ten thirty.
University of Southern Queensland holds classes on
Monday nights from six to eight p.m.
Bristol dojo has beginner classes on Tuesday nights
from seven to nine p.m. and general classes on Friday
nights from seven to nine-thirty p.m.
- What is your class schedule for
kids?
Currently there are no regular childrens classes.
However, courses can be organised for any intereseted
groups.
- What is the focus of the art you
teach?
We focus very much on the learning of
principle. Accumulation of technique will only achieve
so much and that often limited to a dojo environment.
We stress the integration of basic principles in all
that we do so that the art is effective no matter what
the circumstances of the attack.
- Why should I train with you and not
elsewhere?
We offer an effective and practical martial art that
is taught through a traditional Japanese system. As
part of our martial arts community, you will learn not
just physical techniques, but life principles. Our aim
is to give you the tools to become a better human being
and the ability to explore the principles upon which
those tools are based.
- Do you have any openings?
Yes. Teaching is integral to our School, as
such, room is always made for new
students.
- How long does it take to get to black
belt?
Obviously that depends, not just on how often you
train, but with what spirit. That said, the average
time is around four years to shodan, or first level
black belt.
We are a traditional art, not a competitive sport.
However, at the senior level there are free form
practices, both open hand and with weapons. Note
though, that these are not based on structured rules or
the scoring of points. We are not a sport.
- Do you offer a trial program?
We offer new students two free classes to try before
making any level of commitment.
Simply turn up to one of the dojo and introduce
yourself. It is always good to arrive a little early so
that you can be shown a proper warm up routine. Wear
loose, but comfortable clothing if you do not own an
adequate training gi. It is polite to contact the
instructor before arriving, just to ensure the class is
on and is suitable. If you are feeling a little
intimidated by your first martial arts class, rest
assured that our School is quite friendly and welcoming
to newcomers. Bring a friend to train with you, if you
like.
